Where do we purchase Modern Arnis belts? Our school has been teaching Modern Arnis for almost 2 years and none of our students has any belts denoting thier rank, even though they are qualified to wear the belt.

As an individual, who is not really belt happy, this has never been a problem personally, but people expect visible rank and it shows respect for what we are learning.

Modern Arnis is a complete martial art and deserves the same rank respect of other arts. We have grown out of the Non-Traditional "art within your art" type of thinking. In fact, Modern Arnis is truly a Combative (not sport) Mixed Martial Art and it deserves the respect that national ranking gives it.

Guro Chris,
I have gotten some belts in the past from Remy jr. but they are hard to get, unless you have a seamstress or tailor that can add the borders to regular belts. Thats if you want to have Modern Arnis bordered belts.
I also know that Datu Tim Hartman sells the black belt with red borders on his web site. There is also in AWMA a black belt with red borders I think?
I have been getting regular belts and just adding the stripe at the ends that coincides with MARPPIO's colored belt. Example, the white belt I can get with the red stripe down the middle, instead of the border. It still is white with red, it looks good, some Karate schools use it as a junior ranking belt. The brown belt with a red stripe on the ends instead of bordered and the same for the brown belts with white on the ends instead of bordered. You can get creative and come up with something else , but this is a simple alternative for now. I have come up with a Junior Arnisador curriculum and will use regular colored belts like white for Likas, yellow for Likha Isa, orange for Likha Dalawa, green for likha Tatlo, and blue for Likha Apat. This is a more colorful look for the Junior program.
Just my thoughts,Maybe soemone else out there has some Ideas.
Thanks for the question,
Guro Ben.

Guro Ben:

It appears that many people out there have had some past experience with martial arts knows what a yellow, orange or brown belt signify. and that makes a good point for the traditional belt. But to be perfectly honest, I believe that Modern Arnis belt ranks be based off of the tradional brown or black base. The Professor started this and who are we to change it. At least as far as the adult classes go.

As I got my black belt level 1 from Datu Worden in NSI Modern Arnis a few years back, Datu Worden told me to just stitch in a single red stripe on it in order to simulate a Lakan Antos 1.

Later, I got my Lakan ranking in Marpio and got the traditional Modern Arnis belt. But unfortunately there are no other belts available.

I think that your idea of stitching the stripe onto the base brown or black belt makes good sense and keeps the Modern Arnis ranking colors seperate to our own art.

Just a thought.

Excellent statement. When I got my first degree brown belt in 1980 it had blue trim. You find this in the original Modern Arnis book in the rank structure. red trim is for black belts.
Anyway, I do agree keeping the brown and black scheme for sure. The junior class I was changing to differentiate the groups and give the juniors something to shoot for when changing to the Senior Ranks. The juniors would have white, yellow, green, blue, and stop there. When changing over to Senior level they would assume the brown and black belt levels.
Thanks for the input, this kind of dialogue helps us all.
Guro, Ben.

We are working on re-stocking our inventory at MARPPIO. This includes rattan sticks, FMA type belts and NEW T-shirts for 2008 -- apparently, these itmes run out the fastest. We are supporting Dr. Remy Presas Jr's current tour and are in the process of replenishing MARPPIO stock.

We are finishing work on a new online store which will feature the new stock.

Stay tuned for more information on the arrival of new gear.

Thanks!
