Knife Defense 3 Months, 4 Weeks ago

Just wanted to ask the Forum participants about their Knife Curriculum.
What styles or systems influence your Knife work?
What types of knives do you train with?
Do you train Knife Defense or Knife Fighting?
Does this influence your Espada y Daga training?
Knives are dangerous. even with an untrained individual. Always escape and evade when confronted with a knife, if at all possible! Only as a "Last Resort" do you confront a knife wielding individual!
Thanks for your input.

As a student of Modern Arnis under Datu Kelly Worden we are very heavy in knife defensive tactics. both against the knife empty hand and using the knife as a DEFENSIVE tool. As Datu Worden has long been considered the Knife Master of Modern Arnis by the professor, it is natural that I try to mirror his training. One class every month is dedicated to knife play only and it also comes up in regular training. In fact tonight, we were working with stick anyo 3 and the last 20 minutes of class we took the begining right side then left side banda banda tecniques of the form and related them as high and low entry knife thrust defenses. Banda banda cross hands to deflect the thrust with the left hand passing the blade past center, then sliding up to the opponent's elbow to control and/or respond to a sudden quick backslast while your right hand strikes to the eyes, before going to a lock or the old Nike "boot scoot boogie otta there"!. this is a great drill that teaches the practitioner to "fight the man" and not the knife. Lots of fun to play, but in the real world it would be scary to the max!

one of the things i'm finding out about modern arnis via the Presas system is the way that 1.) the students discover new ways of doing things during practice 2.) THIS is encouraged. i appreciate your insight into new ways of, as you said 'related them' as/into something else... this creative aspect is what makes modern arnis dynamic for me and that the potential for growth using myriad combinations and applications is endless.
would you agree that there is no ONE way to do something in modern arnis?

Absolutley! This is the greatest aspect of Modern Arnis. You can see this with all the different goups here in the U.S. Take the IMAF, IMAF Inc, WMAA or Natural Spirit, etc. All groups give honor to the Professors memory by developing their own Modern Arnis. The "Art within your Art", is profound and gives freedom of expression for each individual who trains in Modern Arnis.
The groups mentioned before are really good and have developed a certain "style" within the greater Modern Arnis Family worldwide. Through the seminars of Jeff Delaney, Masters of Tapi-Tapis, Kelly Worden, Tim Hartman and many others, with their students and Instructors, Modern Arnis is being promoted worldwide as an effective system of combat.
Good things are happening with Modern Arnis, and I believe with the guidance of MARPPIO, this will be a multi-generational Art that will be around a long time.
Mabuhay ang Modern Arnis!
Yours in Modern Arnis,
Guro Ben. S.M.A.C.

One of the best Kerambit guys I have seen is Ray Dianoldo of FCS Kali. His stuff is really good. His flow fits into our stuff really well. I believe He has trained with the Professor in the past. Somethings he does is a little scary, (if you have wathed any "you tube" videos you will know what I mean). But we apply most of what I teach to a Modern Arnis approach. Knife Defense these days takes on a different feel. We are continually living in a dangerous society with guns and wepaons of all kinds.
Our training has to be as realistic as possible. Our self-Dfenese training does employ mass attack strategies, in strairwells, outdoors, etc. Training with knives is, sadly, a reality!
Being smart, using verbal defense to de-escalate a situation, situation assessment to seek escape routes, awareness of your surroundings so you don't put yourself in a life threatening situation, and learning to carry, deploy and use your knife if the situation calls for it.
This will be followed up with Gun Defense from techniques and tactics as well as carry, deployment and SAFE HANDLING PROCEDURES!
We have contacted a local CCW school who specializes in just these issues. All Instrutors will be offered a chance to safely train at there facility in all safe handling and deployment of pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns, etc.
You may never carry a weapon, but to understand the functions of firearms, you may save a life someday or stop a mass shooting in a Mall or school. This goes for knives and weapons of all kinds.
Hopefully we will never be confronted with a life threatening situation, but to be prepared and knowledgable could mean life or death.
Just some thoughts.
Guro Ben.
