Blog Kalayaan Picnic 2008: Sterling Modern Arnis Club
We just got a report of this fabulous event from Guro Ben Harrison of the Sterling Modern Arnis Club in Michigan. He describes this year’s Kalayaan Picnic and has included pictures for you all to enjoy.
Sterling Modern Arnis Clubs Demo team for the 2008 Kalayaan Picnic:
Jaysen James, Krista Harrison, Kathleen Enal, Allen Henton and Kevin (Remy Jr. Jr.) Enal.
This years team was lead by Kathleen Enal. The team opened with the Anyos using swords.
Then they moved into the Sumbrada (6 & 8 count give and take) drill that got the crowd ooing a aahhing. Our team did it fast and furious, which the crowd loved. Then we moved into the sinawali drills with Kevin and Allen and Jaysen and Krista.
Then the event that drew the most response was Kevin’s Self-defense against the much larger Jaysen, included a counter into a throw and ground control…..he did great! Krista and Allen did a great self-defense demo following Kevin.
Next, was the 5-6-7 knife drill that again got the crowd going again. It was very fast with disarms at different points of the drill.
Finally, ended up with a sparring demonstration with full sparring gear with helmets and body armour. Very visual and the crowd was rooting for Black to beat Red. Allen(black) ended the match with a disarm of Jaysen (red).
Everyone loved the food and music. Especially the Panset that Kathleens Mom made and Kathleens eggrolls.
We hope to present another demo at next years celebration.
